CHAPTER 6

STORYTELLING STRATEGIES

Storytellers have forever relied on narrative strategies to reach their readers. Some stories are bookended by a different story, some are stories within stories, some are “just so” stories, stories that start with an artifact or present-day condition, the story being a slow march to its emergence.

Every storyteller makes her own choices about how to tell the story. Stories can be told forward, backward, jumping back and forth in time. Even the simple word “meanwhile” suggests a conscious choice by a storyteller to avoid certain sections of a narrative in lieu of new ones, in the service of a greater thematic or dramatic impact.

Comics can learn from the long history of literature and narrative poetry, from the theater and cinema and any art form with a timeline.

In these three examples, which are all stories about parents, we’ll see three different approaches to narrative, varying from tone to chronology.
